Earth Hour: Doing A Small Thing for Mother Earth

Today at 8:30 in the evening, I invite everyone to turn off your lights, PC's, TV's and everything electrical at your homes for an hour (or more, go beyond an hour) because it is Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is celebrated every year and my family participates to this global campaign. We turn off our lights, and join the community in observing an our without light. It was like those days when I was young and there are power shortage and everyone is outside, playing guitar, chatting, having fun, with only the moonlight as the source of light. It was fun even if we don't use the stuff technology gifted us today. It brings us back to the basics.

So what happens if everyone around the world would turn off their lights for an hour together? It will save a huge amount of resources. If we save resources, we can delay the effects of global warming for just a bit. And this is essential for the future generations.

Here are Fun Facts from http://www.wwf.org.ph/earthhour/ which was sent through email in the office:

The Philippines topped global Earth Hour participation levels for both 2009 and 2010. Ten million Filipinos in 647 towns, cities and municipalities switched off in 2009, while 15 million Filipinos in 1076 towns and cities joined the 2010 switch-off. Over a billion people from 128 countries participated in Earth Hour 2010 – marking it as the largest environmental event in known human history.

I am not that active in the campaign against global warming or an advocate environmentalist but I know in me that I want to be part of the solution and not the problem. I wanted to help. So even in small ways, I wanted to cooperate with the rest of the world. Even if it is just as simple as turning off the lights for an hour, I would do it, if the future would be a bit better for the next generation.

To everyone, let's all switch off this evening and I encourage everyone to go beyond the hour. Also, before leaving your office, make sure your PC's are shut down and the lights are turned off. Lets do this together for a better tomorrow.

HAPPY EARTH HOUR! :)
